Soft resets can be done for the starters, legendary encounters, overworld Pokémon like the Sudowoodo that blocks your path, prize Pokémon from the game corner, and fossil Pokémon. There isn’t a registered button combo that will soft reset a console version on the 3DS, but touching the lower screen will give you the option to restart the game. To soft reset on a Gameboy Color or Gameboy Advanced SP you need to hold down A,B, Select, and Start at the same time. You can also Repel Trick to try and narrow down the Pokémon you want to run into. Head-butting a tree can make a Pokémon fall out and start an encounter. A popular way to random encounter in these games is utilizing the head butt trees scattered across the region. If you can encounter it in the wild it can be shiny(except for all of the Unown letters that aren’t I and V). You don’t want to risk losing a shiny because the last box you had open was one that was full. Keep an eye on your boxes too! If a box is full, the Pokémon you catch can’t be sent to it and it becomes completely deleted. There is a weird programming error that makes it so the fast ball only works on Magnemite, Grimer, and Tangela. Cubone, Quagsire, Teddiursa, Delibird, and Phanphy all have a 50% chance of fleeing from you. Mime, Dratini, Dragonair, Unown, Snubbull, and Heracross all have a 10% change of fleeing from you.
I also want to quickly mention that certain kinds of Pokémon are able to flee from you in these games. I personally recommend getting the console version of Crystal because you can get an in-game Celebi at the end of the game that you can actually soft reset for! You also can’t transfer from a physical copy of Gold, Silver, or Crystal to a newer game, so you’re limiting the Pokémon to a cartridge that could potentially give out at any moment. Getting the console version keeps this from ever happening because your 3ds doesn’t have an internal save battery. A save file will automatically erase itself when a save battery dies. The older games have a chance of their internal battery dying. There isn’t any real way to raise your shiny odds in these games(except for one specific way that I will explain later.) I personally recommend hunting in the console versions that you can buy in the 3DS eShop. The shape of an Unown is also determined by stats, so you will never find a shiny that isn’t the letters “I” or “V”. The stats to be a female will never be the same as the shiny stats, so you will never find a female shiny starter, a female shiny Eevee, or a female shiny Togepi. The stats that determine if your starter is male or female are different from the stats that determine if the starter is shiny. Because of this, I won’t be making a shiny hunting guide for any of the Generation 1 games, but amino user Reshirose already hunted a Zapdos on Pokémon Yellow So technically speaking, you CAN find a shiny in Red, Blue, Yellow, but it won’t appear shiny until you trade/transfer it. The shiny status is determined by stats, which is why trading from a Gen 1 game can turn it shiny if the stats are the correct spread. And giving you a wider variety at the start of the game which makes it easier to build a crazy team before even fighting Falkner.Gold and Silver were the games that first introduced shiny Pokémon to the franchise!
